Unicorn cakes are one of the most trending cakes today. They have become a top choice for birthdays especially if you have a kid in the house. And no wonder, they look very attractive and tempting. Even adults can’t take off their eyes from those beautifully looking unicorn cakes. They look like the ones we have seen in fairytales and cartoons.  


There are some hundreds and thousands of unicorn cake designs. You can make one according to your requirement and the tools, products you have. If you want you can buy the tools necessary for your unicorn cake design from stores or can purchase online. The recipe for making this cake is not difficult but is definitely time-consuming.

Here is a detailed recipe for making a unicorn cake. Follow the steps carefully and the result will be a yummy and delicious cake.


  • Step 1: Prepare Vanilla Cake


Prepare Vanilla Cake


  •  2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup butter
  • ½ tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 2 eggs
  • Pinch of salt


Start preheating the oven for baking the cake.


Mix all the dry ingredients i.e. flour, sugar, salt, baking powder properly.


Then slowly pour the milk and keep on whisking it to avoid any lumps.


Add vanilla essence for flavour.


Now add both the eggs and start mixing it well until it forms a fluffy batter.


Transfer the batter into greased cake tins.


Keep it in the oven for 30-35 minutes.

  • Step 2: Prepare Chocolate Cake


Prepare Chocolate Cake


  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cup sugar
  • ¾ cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ¾ tbsp baking soda
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup oil
  • ¼ cup cream
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt


Preheat the oven for baking the cake.


Take a container and pour about 1 cup of water into it.


Boil the water and add cocoa powder into it. Whisk the mixture well.


Now add all the dry ingredients i.e. flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a bowl and mix it properly.


Prepare a batter of eggs, oil, cream and vanilla essence and pour into the bowl of dry ingredients mixture.


Then add cocoa powder mixture and keep whisking it untill it becomes a fluffy batter.


Empty the batter into greased cake tins.


Keep it in the oven for 30-35 minutes.


After baking, cool down vanilla and chocolate cakes and store them in a fridge.


  • Step 3: Chocolate Sauce

  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup milk
  • ¾ tbsp butter
  • ¼ tbsp vanilla essence
  • Pinch of salt


Mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder and beat it well.


Take another container and heat milk, vanilla essence and butter.


Start adding the dry mixture into milk mixture slowly and keep heating it on medium flame.


Stir continuously for about 5 minutes.


Then turn off the gas and add salt and mix it.

  • Step 4: Chocolate Frosting

  • 2 cup butter
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp vanilla essence
  • 8 tbsp milk
  • 7-8 cup sugar


Start beating butter and cocoa powder together.


Add sugar and vanilla essence into it and mix it well.


Now slowly pour the milk in the mixture and keep beating it untill it becomes fluffy. 


  • Step 5: Assemble The Cake




Apply very little chocolate frosting on the cake board.


Place vanilla cakes on it.


Apply some sugar syrup on the cake.


Spread a layer of chocolate frosting and then chocolate sauce on it.


Now place chocolate cakes on it.


Make sure your cakes are flat so that they can stand still on one another. If you want you can scrape the extra part of the cake.


Don’t forget to add sugar syrup between the cakes to avoid stickiness.


Again place a layer of chocolate frosting and then chocolate sauce on it


If you want to make a large tier cake, you can increase the number of cakes and keep on following the same process.


Now apply chocolate frosting on the top and sides of the cake. 


Keep the cake in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours.

  • Step 6: Buttercream Frosting


Buttercream Frosting


After taking out the cake from refrigerator, apply buttercream frosting on top and sides of the cake.


Keep scrapping the extra part of the frosting for a perfect look.


You can buy unicorn horns, ears and other toppers from any store. Unicorn eyes can be made from fondant.


And finally, your amazing looking, delectable unicorn cake is ready to serve.
