For centuries, no celebration has been complete without a dessert, be it a cake or a cheesecake. They have been the most anticipated part of a meal course, kids’ favorite and a dessert lover’s heaven.

According to a recent report, the cake market is forecasted to reach 76 billion dollars during the period of 2019 – 2024. Yes, that’s a huge amount and it includes not just cakes but also cupcakes and cheesecakes. So just imagine how many people are consuming these delicious desserts on a regular basis!

Cakes have existed way before cheesecakes and while some may argue that a cheesecake is just a cake variant, it’s actually not. There’s a basic texture difference and both are made in different ways.

So whether it’s the bread-based cake or the cheesecake made out of cream-cheese and biscuits, they each have their loyal fan-base and to further clarify the difference between these two desserts, here are some interesting facts :-

    Cheesecake –

First and foremost, a cheesecake is not actually a cake. This delectable dessert is a sweet tart made up of soft, fresh cheese, cream, sugar and eggs. The distinguishing element of a cheesecake is the base or bottom layer which is made from crushed cookies, biscuits, crackers or sometimes pastry. There are two types of cheesecakes – baked and unbaked.

Did you know that the first cheesecake was created in Greece? The ancient Greeks used simple ingredients like wheat, flour, honey and cheese which was mixed together, formed into a cake and baked. Centuries later, cheesecakes made their way into America, with a variety of regional recipes brought over by immigrants. The original American cheesecake wasn’t invented until the late 1800s.

While the New York Style Cheesecake is the most popular of all, there are other styles of cheesecakes as well, like the Chicago, Italian, Dutch, Asian and Brazilian style cheesecakes which are equally delicious. Blueberry Cheesecake, Mango Cheesecake and Oreo Cheesecake are some of the modern-day popular flavours.

    Cake

The beloved cake needs no introduction. It has become such a staple dessert throughout the world that we can’t imagine our lives without this mouth-watering dessert. Cakes are made using flour, butter, sugar, eggs, baking powder, and some additional ingredients and flavorings, depending on the cake you want.

Cakes originally started out being modifications of bread, but today they share some features with other desserts like pies, pastries and custards. Cake making is no longer a complicated procedure due to availability and accessibility of the ingredients, baking equipment and cake recipes.

Some of the modern cake varieties are sponge cakes, chiffon cakes, vegan cakes, etc. When it comes to the flavors, cakes have come a long way. Yes, the good old Fruit Cake and Chocolate Cake is still popular, but think of flavors like White Forest Cake, Mango Rose Cake and Red Velvet Cake

    Conclusion

We hope this has made the difference between a cake and a cheesecake crystal clear. If not, we highly recommend you actually eat them and see for yourself. Trust us, one bite and it will drive our point home!
