“Never compromise on the quality and price of your product. Always learn from the best tutors.” – Shaija Faizal

It is said that there are three ingredients in the good life: learning, earning and yearning. Someone who strongly believes in this is founder of Cakeria, Shaija Faizal, a home baker who specializes in customized cakes and other delectable desserts.

This talented baker started baking when she was 15 years old, after she attended a baking class. She soon developed an interest in this craft and started to experiment with a lot of recipes. She says, “I used to take my baked items to college and got a lot of positive reviews from my friends there. I continued to bake for fun even after marriage and after my third child, I had free time so I decided to take up baking seriously, as a profession. I had got an order from my friend for a Barbie Cake and that actually encouraged me to start my baking business.”

Shaija remembers her first order, “That Barbie Cake was my first commercial order and it turned out to be a success.”

A baker’s life is without a doubt, full of memorable experiences. Shaija says, “Most of the cakes are challenging for me, because I’m not so good at art. So it’s all about hard work for me. In the beginning, it was a bit tough but with my husband’s support, and a lot of practice and experimentation, I was able to do well gradually. I am a perfectionist, I just want all the aspects of my cake to be perfect, right from the taste and price to the overall quality.”

Speaking specifically about her challenging projects, she shares, “All the wedding and tiered cakes are quite tough, but I somehow manage to make it as per the customer’s expectations.” As to her favourite cake, she says she loves the bridal shower cake that she made recently.

Shaija believes that learning from the best tutors in the industry is very important for honing your skills and for long-term sustainability. She has herself taken training from expert tutors and this completely reflects in her perfect creations.

In the coming years, Shaija wants to focus more on quality rather than quantity. She explains,” I don’t want to take bulk orders- whatever order I take, I want it to be perfect and give the customer a quality product. So I have slowly reduced the number of orders now. I also want to make more elaborate and bigger cakes.”

For all the budding bakers, she shares a vital piece of advice,” Never compromise on the quality and price of your product and always keep learning from the best tutors. If all these things are on point, then customers will always come to you.”

The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from you. – Shaija Faizal
